In order to export your artwork out of Canada to the destination country, an export declaration is required by the Canada Border Services Agency for any artwork valued at or above $2,000 CAD.
The following is required to successfully export your artwork:
Step 1: Register for a 9- digit Business Number (BN9) through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). You can register here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/registering-your-business/register.html
Step 2: Obtain an Import/Export Account Extension (BN15).
Complete form BSF947 "Request for a CBSA Import/Export Program Account" - Be sure to note that you are requesting an account for "Exports".
- You can complete this through the CARM Client Portal: https://ccp-pcc.cbsa-asfc.cloud-nuage.canada.ca/en/auth/login
- To submit your completed BSF947 form email: CARM_rm_support-soutien_rm_gcra@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca
Step 3: Create a login to Canadian Export Reporting System (CERS). Please create a login here: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/services/export/portal-portail/menu-eng.html
- Please complete form BSF 831 (CERS Application Form).
- Form available at: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/bsf831-eng.html
- Email the completed form to the Commercial Registration Unit (CRU) at: cbsa.export_program-programme_exportation.asfc@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca
- It will take about 5 business days to receive your Authorization ID and 'Shared Secret'.
Step 4: Submit Export Declaration
- Use the CERS portal to submit your electronic export declaration
- General information about CERS can be found at: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/services/cers-scde/menu-eng.html
To complete your export declaration in CERS, determine the appropriate export Harmonized Description and Coding System classification number (HS code) for the goods.
To do this you will need to enter the 8-digit Canadian Export Classification number that describes your goods.
Here is a breakdown of the classification numbers. Please use one that corresponds to your artwork:
- Paintings, Drawings, Pastels: 9701.9100
- Original Sculpture of any material: 9703.9000
Step 5: You can provide the proof of report number to the courier upon collection. The proof of report is a number issued by the CERS system indicating that you have reported your goods to the CBSA. Please also print out the export declaration for the courier.
Step 6: Please ensure your artwork is packaged per our guidelines, which I have attached below. Note that your artwork will only be covered under our insurance policy if it is adequately packed according to these guidelines.
Step 7: The shipping label, commercial invoice, declaration of art, and certificate of authenticity will be available in your sales dashboard 2-3 days prior to your ship date.
